Practice Implementation Asia |
| In
keeping with the UNDP’s branding as the Global Development
Network which supports the development of communities of practice
where groups of staff members who share a common concern, set
of problems, or passion about a particular UNDP practice area
strive to deepen their knowledge and expertise by interacting
on an ongoing basis, the Disaster Reduction Unit continues to
promote the development of disaster reduction sub-practice communities
within the regions of Asia
and Latin America and the
Caribbean. In November 2003, UNDP staff from more than 16
countries in Asia-Pacific,
together with BCPR, RBAP and SURFs in Kathmandu and Bangkok discussed
programmes relating to violent conflicts, transitional recovery
and natural disasters. This was the first exchange of this kind
in the region, considered by the participants as a milestone for
learning, knowledge and capacity building within the CPR community
of practitioners.
The
development of a knowledge
map for disaster risk reduction in Asia and a sub-practice
workshop are some of the immediate follow-up activities planned
to develop the community and enhance the practice in Asia.

Practice Implementation LAC |
| In
June 2003, DRU organised a regional disaster reduction sub- practice
workshop, which was held in Barbados
with the support of the UNDP country office. During three days
more than 30 people from 19 countries met there to share experiences
and develop the process of building the community of practice
on disaster reduction in the region. The workshop presented an
opportunity to improve and spread knowledge on risk reduction
and to establish a substantive agenda based on strategic opportunities
for joint activities at the regional level.

Cross Cultural Network |
| Additionally,
through the ongoing Caribbean
Risk Management Initiative (CRMI) the programme will support
the development of a cross-cultural DR practice through the development
of a network involving participation from the spanish, english
and french speaking Caribbean. This external network will be facilitated
out of the Cuba
Country Office. The Facility will have several key objectives.
First, it will promote the interchange of experiences in climate
risk management between the English, Spanish and French speaking
countries, one key aspect of which will be translations of key
resource materials into all three languages. Second, it will seek
to bridge the gap between the climate change community and disaster
reduction community. Third, the Facility will serve as a clearinghouse
for climate risk management information, best practices, technical
and scientific studies, including materials generated in the larger
Latin America and Caribbean
region as well as globally. Finally, it will seek to become
a centre of excellence in the area of climate risk management
and will produce and disseminate original thinking on the subject.

Practice Workshop Africa |
| In
Africa, DRU also supports the staging of a CPR Practice Workshop
for Africa and facilitate
the disaster reduction discussions of this larger practice. This
workshop will form the basis for furthering the discussions through
the development of a DRU sub practice for Africa later on in 2005.

Sub Regional Initiative |
| This
activity which was initiated in 2002 is focused on strengthening
national and regional capacities for disaster risk management
in south-west and central
Asia, through the establishment of a Sub-Regional Initiative
for Disaster Risk Management. This initiative is currently coordinated
from the UNDP Country Office
in the Islamic Republic of Iran. This activity was designed
to Generate and share base-line knowledge on contemporary disaster
risk and risk management issues in the countries to be included
in the sub-regional initiative, in order to clearly determine
the thematic focus of the initiative. (2) assess the interest
and need for the initiative amongst countries in the sub-region.
Following a successful networking workshop of this initiative
in early 2003 where 11 Central Asian countries participated, the
focus was clearly defined to develop a community of practice which
focuses on the predominant hazards of drought and earthquakes.
