The northwestern region of Uzbekistan has been the scene of major drought during last three years. It is already under ecological stress due to the shrinkage of the Aral Sea and is facing water shortages. UNDP accepted a request to provide assistance to government efforts to mobilize relief assistance. In recent months, UNDP’s emergency focus has shifted towards providing assistance in formulating national and regional disaster prevention policies, as it is considered to be of highest importance in light of imminent water shortages in the region.
