Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States is a region that suffers from the threat of natural disasters in combination with political unrest. Additionally, the region is still suffering from the 1986 nuclear power plant explosion in Chernobyl. The Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (RBEC) administers the UNDP’s programmes in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), playing an important role in the transition process through empowering people, organizations and governments to promote sustainable human development.
The Disaster Reduction Unit of the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR) has provided support to several countries in Europe and CIS and technical support to the Stability Pact-Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Initiative (12 countries). Some of the countries and projects are listed below. The team is composed of the focal point in Geneva (BCPR), Maria Olga Gonzalez, and the Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS (RBEC) in New York.
