Asia
is the most disaster-prone region in the world. Each year
millions of people are affected by natural disasters. Frequent
occurrence of floods, drought, landslides, earthquakes and
cyclones have often eroded development gains and in some
cases, even exacerbated existing social and economic crises.
Vulnerability reduction has emerged as one of the key elements
of sustainable development process. There has been a growing
awareness among decision-makers for greater impetus on comprehensive
disaster risk management rather than just post disaster
relief of better response preparedness. However, this growing
awareness has to translate into further tangible action
that is focused on systematic risk management across all
sectors and geographic levels. The Regional
Bureau for Asia and the Pacific of UNDP has been actively
supporting capacity-building in high risk countries. Many
country offices in Asia are addressing disaster-related
concerns in their regular country programmes, with significant
achievements. |
