The recent UNDP Arab Human Development Report notes that poverty and inequality were dr amatically reduced in the region during the last century. But human development is faltering as deeply rooted obstacles in Arab institutional structures, namely deficits in freedom, the empowerment of women and knowledge, hinder efforts to improve the lives of the region’s population. Natural disasters contribute to this situation as chronic water shortages and drought in particular further constrain regional performance. UNDP has 17 COs in the Arab States (Middle East and North Africa). The work of UNDP has ranged from capacity-building to policy formulating within a region that has diverse needs due to the varied economic of the countries it serves.
