Much of Sierra Leone was devastated by 11 years of brutal war,(officially ended in 2002) with more than half of the entire population forced into displacement. In addition, the main sources of economic prosperity were severely disrupted. As an example, the maternal mortality rates increased to become the highest in the world, the school enrollment dropped and the immunization coverage decline by more than 40%; In UNDP’s annual Human Development reports for 2000, 2001 and 2002, Sierra Leone was ranked last out of the over 140 countries listed.

The causes of the 11 years conflict were rooted in a mix of bad governance, denial of fundamental human rights, economic mismanagement and social exclusion. UNDP-Sierra Leone, along with its partners – UN Agencies, UNAMSIL, NGOs, Civil Societies etc, are joining hands to support the Government and people of Sierra Leone to build peace, reinforce security, reduce poverty, and foster good governance etc. (...)
