Workshop of Natural Disaster Hotspots and Risk Reduction
in Developing Countries |
Together
with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The World Bank/
Provention Consortium and the Centre for Hazards and Risk Research
at the Columbia University in New York, NGI
organized and hosted the Workshop Identification of Natural Disaster
Hotspots and Risk Reduction in Developing Countries, Monday 27.
September 2004.
The workshop highlighted the Reduction of Natural Disaster Risk
as a major challenge in today's world. A recent comprehensive
study - "Reducing
Disaster Risk: A challenge for Development " - carried
out by UNDP concludes that reducing the disaster risk is a priority
for development.
The Workshop focused on both risk identification and risk reduction
and presented results from the comprehensive program known as
the Global Hot Spot Project, where the floods, earthquakes, landslides
and volcano hazards are analysed.
The aims of the Workshop was to:
| -
Form an arena where specialists, government representatives,
UN agencies, NGO representatives, researchers, academica
and private industry openly can exchange experience and
ideas about risk management
-
Raise awareness on the subject of prevention
work relative to emergency assistance
-
Identify major subject in natural disaster risk
management that are of key importance to bring up in the
"UN
World Conference on Disaster Reduction (WCDR) in Kobe
18-22 January 2005". |

UNDP in the Caribbean: Assisting in the emergency and
Assesing Perspectives for Recovery |
Tropical
Storm Jeanne hit the Island of Hispaniola on 16 September, causing
death and destruction in Haiti when it brought flooding and landslides
to the impoverished country. Another 11 people were killed in
the Dominican Republic. Jeanne was the tenth named storm for the
Atlantic hurricane season, which followed Ivan, with its trail
of devastation on Grenada and other Caribbean states.
UNDP has provided an exemplary response to the present disasters
through the combined efforts of Country Offices, the Regional
Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Bureau for
Crisis Prevention and Recovery. The decided action of the Country
offices, the rapid provision of Trac 1.1.3 resources for sudden
onset emergencies and the deployment of four Advisors from BCPR’s
Disaster Reduction Unit (DRU) to the affected countries (Grenada,
Cuba, Jamaica and Haiti), has enabled UNDP to be ahead of the
curve in developing recovery programming that will address the
countries’ needs and contribute to the reduction of future
risks. (...)

Huracán Ivan - informe de la Situación N°6 |
Aunque
