CDERA - Grenada - 29-10-2004
Video Documentary in Grenada

Hurricane Ivan has devastated the island of Grenada, flattening houses and severing power supplies. The experiences and lessons learnt from Hurricane Ivan's impact on Grenada is being documented on video for regional dissemination. The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) has signed a contract with Warm Water Productions of Barbados to produce a 30-minute video documentary which is to be shared with the wider Caribbean public, regional disaster managers, as well as the regional and international donor community. The video is also expected to be part of the educational kits used by disaster managers in community preparedness training. (...)

World Conference on Disaster Reduction - Second Session of the PReparatory Committee - 11-12 October 2004 - Statement of UNDP on the Draft Programme Outcome Document

World Conference on disaster Reduction - 18-22 January 2005, Kobe, Hyogo, JapanUNDP would like to express its continued commitment to the ISDR, and acknowledges the excellent work of the ISDR-Secretariat and the Bureau of Member States during this preparatory process for the World Conference on Disaster Reduction (WCDR).
UNDP welcomes and supports the initiative to develop a programme outcome document, which sets out overall goals, objectives and priorities to guide disaster risk reduction beyond the WCDR. The draft programme outcome document has evolved from the Framework for Monitoring and Guiding Disaster Reduction, produced in a collaborative effort by the ISDR-Secretariat and UNDP. In addition, UNDP also provided inputs and direction to early drafts of this document.

UNDP in the Caribbean: Choosing the Right Path Towards Sustainable Recovery
Photo: The devastating effects of Tropical Storm Jeanne in the Caribbean. REUTERSThe devastating effects of Tropical Storm Jeanne and its predecessors in the harshest hurricane season of this century still feature in the daily news. The death toll and economic losses grow as the damage assessment progresses in those areas where access is possible. That is not the case for all affected areas, especially in Haiti. UNDP continues to support the most affected countries with specialised technical resources and funding to develop recovery programming that will address priority needs and contribute to reducing future risks. BCPR’s Regional Disaster Reduction Advisor, recovery and programme specialists remain in the region to provide direct support to the most affected countries and to foster intra-regional cooperation and exchange.
UNDP contributions from Trac 1.1.3 total US$450,000, with additional considerable support and funding from the Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Country Offices in the region. Recovery programmes for Grenada (US$300,000) and Jamaica (US$300,000) will be approved shortly, bringing the total investment under Trac 1.1.3 to over US$ 1 million. This, however, has led to the mobilisation of donor funding in the order of over US$4 million for Grenada only. Pledges and expressions of interest for the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica have been received and are expected to generate more resources and attention to the priorities identified by UNDP. Reducing Disaster Risk in Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
Photo: Kigston after hurricane Ivan's Jamaica - REUTERSThe 2004 hurricane season with still two months left to go is proving to be one of the worst hurricane seasons in recent Caribbean history. In terms of the number of countries already impacted (12), deaths (over 2000) and damage and destruction to, housing, infrastructure and economic livelihoods, this year’s hurricane season is unprecedented. Hurricanes Charley, Francis, Ivan and Jeanne have devastated either entire countries as in the case of Grenada and the Cayman Islands, or large pockets of highly vulnerable populations in this Small Island Developing States region (SIDS). The effects of these disasters particularly in the case of SIDS is of increasing concern as these events clearly demonstrate that they can negatively affect the entire populations and economic base of these islands as was seen in Grenada after Hurricane Ivan where the situation was one of total devastation with 90% of the homes and structures damaged or destroyed and economic damage estimates standing at approximately $800 million USD.
