Natural Disaster Reduction

While effective emergency management plays a vital role in avoiding loss of life and suffering, it generally fails to make the connection between disaster risk and development. In recognition of this UNDP has adopted a viable approach to disaster reduction which recognizes the fact that disasters are unresolved development problems that occur when risks go unmanaged. The mainstreaming of disaster reduction into development and post-disaster recovery has therefore become an essential component of UNDP's approach to building a capacity for sustainable human development.

UNDP seeks to ensure that disaster risk considerations are factored into national and regional development programmes and that countries take advantage of recovery following disasters as unique opportunities to mitigate future risks and vulnerabilities.

Activities include:

Promoting the integration of disaster risk planning and preparation into national and regional development programmes;

Providing advice on risk reduction strategies as part of recovery programmes;strengthening global, national and regional institutional structures for sustainable disaster risk reduction through regional and sub-regional knowledge networks;

Enabling countries to share information on strategies and best practices for reducing disaster risk and vulnerability through regional and sub-regional knowledge networks;

Contributing to global advocacy on disaster reduction through the preparation of the global report, Reducing Disaster Risk, to promote the role of effective policy and frameworks in reducing disaster risk;

Supporting an inter-agency disaster management training programme available for officials in risk prone countries. Disaster Management Training Programme (DMTP);

Mainstreaming Disaster Reduction in UNDP practice areas such as :
1) Poverty eradication and sustainable livelihoods;
2) Gender equality and the advancement of women;
3) Environmental and natural resources sustainability, and
4) Sound governance.
