UNDP Yemen welcoming new Country Dirrector

UNDP Yemen has the honor of welcoming Ms. Mikiko Tanaka as its new Country Director. Ms. Tanaka started her assignment in Yemen today, 24th December 2013, taking over from the former Senior Country Director Gustavo Gonzalez.

In her new capacity, Ms. Tanaka will oversee the day-to-day management and operation of UNDP’s work, which concentrates on supporting the Yemeni Government and local communities to develop their own solutions to the challenges of development in the four key areas: democratic governance, crisis prevention and recovery, poverty reduction and environment and energy. In all its work UNDP pays close attention to the protection of human rights and empowerment of women.

Prior to taking up her post in Yemen Ms. Tanaka served as the Country Director in UNDP Timor-Leste for three years. She holds a Master of Science in Public Policy and Management and a Master of Rural Development Management.

Her career with UNDP began in 1995. She has served in UNDP Lao PDR as Programme Officer,  in UNDP China as UNV Programme Coordinator/Poverty Alleviation Advisor and in UNDP Pakistan as Deputy Country Director.

UNDP as an organization was able to help the Government of Yemen and its people, prior and after reunification, to address development needs. UNDP has notable and recognized contributions in many development sectors such as, agriculture, telecommunication, metrology, standardization and quality control, civil aviation, postal, water resources management, environment protection, microfinance, community-based development, information technology, statistical management, HIV/AIDS, local governance and decentralization, elections, improve business doing environment, and many others areas.
