Violence against women and girls appears all too often in headlines across the world. But along with the cases that make the news are many thousands of other incidents occurring every day, on every continent, and in every country. According to the World Health Organization, gender-based violence kills as many women between the ages of 15 and 44 as does cancer. Its toll on women's health surpasses that of traffic accidents and malaria combined.

We have gathered on the occasion of an Inception Workshop, which marks the official launch of our newest climate change adaptation project, which will be implemented jointly with our long-time partner, Uzhydromet. Some three years, in close consultation with our national partners we have started developing this project proposal – we are launching the project today, which also happens to be the largest climate change adaptation initiative to date in Uzbekistan.

Recently travelled to Karakalpakstan for a field trip to Ustyurt – Sudochi in the middle of the desert, which is a true miracle of biodiversity with many species of birds. However it was heartbreaking to see the dying Aral Sea. Difference was Planets Earth and Mars.

A very warm welcome on behalf of the UN system in Uzbekistan. It is a pleasure to be here in the international conference on “Ensuring labor rights: the experience of Uzbekistan and international labor standards”. I would like to congratulate the co-organizers of the conference, which is a very timely and important event. This is why I would like to look at the significance of the conference from three angles: from the perspective of the current development position of Uzbekistan; from the rights angle; and from the view of cooperation between the Government and the United Nations.

On this World AIDS Day, I am more optimistic than ever. Much of the world is accelerating progress in responding to HIV. There are significant decreases in new infections and deaths, and we are making good progress in realising our target of ensuring 15 million people have access to antiretroviral treatment by 2015. This is crucial to halting and reversing the AIDS epidemic for good.
