    Disaster Risk Reduction in “Kamchik” Pass

    A new component of on-going UNDP ‘Strengthening Disaster Risk Management Capacitates in Uzbekistan’ project ‘Disaster Risk Reduction in “Kamchik” Pass’ funded by the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO) and UNDP Uzbekistan was launched recently.

    Strengthening Partnerships to Prevent Corruption

    On Tuesday the 9th of December, an Open Door event was held in recognition of ‘International Anti-Corruption Day’ at the General Prosecutor’s Hall in Tashkent. The event was organised jointly by the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, to recognise the importance of the UN Convention against Corruption as adopted on the 14th of December 2005. Attended by representatives of UN agencies, international and national partners, and academia, it served to strengthen national partnership for making prevention of corruption a priority for the 2016-2020 United Nations Development Assistance Framework for Uzbekistan.

    Education for biodiversity conservation

    In November the joint UNDP/GEF/Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan Project ‘Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Uzbekistan’s Oil-and-gas Sector Policies and Operations’ organized a series of training workshops to enhance the capacity of inspection staff of the state nature preservation authorities, specialists of the state environmental expertise departments of the State Committee for nature protection (SCNP) and environmentalists of a number of oil and gas companies.

    Budget Code: one year of probation has passed

    A year ago, in December 2013, the Law "On approval of the Budget Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan" was adopted. The Budget Code sets up general principles of budgetary legislation, legal basis for functioning the budget system and the procedures of forming, reviewing, accepting, approving, and executing the state budget of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

    RIA implementation discussed

    UNDP Uzbekistan jointly with the Institute for Monitoring of Current Legislation (IMCL) under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan held the workshop that discussed the mechanisms and principles of regulatory impact assessment (RIA) and measures on its further implementation in Uzbekistan. The event was moderated by Dr. Lorenzo Allio, Director of Allio/Rodrigo Consulting (Switzerland) and the senior analyst of the European Risk Forum (Belgium).

    First Website Dedicated to Pistachios in Central Asia

    The Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), with support from UNDP in Uzbekistan and the Republican scientific-production Centre for Ornamental Horticulture and Forestry, has announced the launch of a thematic internet portal of pistachios. It is already available for users at the www.pistachio.uz address.

    Workshop on 'International standard GlobalGAP: fruits and vegetables'

    Current requirements for producers of fruits and vegetables include assurance that their product is grown in a safe settings and with the environment in mind. New requests from consumers, international retail chains and legislation have led to the emergence of new requirements for farmers and producers. According to the new quality standards, applied production techniques are aimed at minimizing detrimental environmental impacts of farming operations, reducing the use of chemical inputs and ensuring a responsible approach to worker health and safety.

    On the 20th of November, 2014, an international seminar on ‘Issues of the Effective Usage of Information-Communication Technologies in Courts’ Activities’ was organised by the UNDP ‘Civil Justice Reform: Effective Court Management’ project and its partners. This meeting developed an approach through which Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can be best enhanced into the national justice system.

    Making Procurement More Transparent

    The public procurement system is crucial for the development of the national economy and accounts for 11% of the country's GDP. Being a significant customer and consumer of goods and services, the government undertakes measures to set-up transparent and competitive environment for the effective public procurement process. Given that currently there is no a single legislative act that regulates activities in this field, the development of the draft Law on Public Procurement is an important step towards further enhancing public procurement legal framework in Uzbekistan.

    Cihan Sultanoğlu Visits Uzbekistan

    From the 27th to the 30th of October, the Assistant Administrator and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS Ms. Cihan Sultanoğlu, visited Uzbekistan.     'Vital Opportunities for Cooperation' – UNDP chief concludes her visit to Uzbekistan

    UNDP Administrator, Helen Clark has just completed a five-day visit to Uzbekistan, during which she met with the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. HE Islam Karimov, and ministers, met with national and international development partners, and visited important historical sites in Khorezm and Bukhara which are vital to the tourism sector. The visit directed attention to a number of key initiatives and their impact. Helen Clark emphasised the need to always work to scale up initiatives. She was delighted to see the emergence of new opportunities for co-operation in a number of priority areas.

    UNDP Administrator Helen Clark’s Presentation at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy ‘From the MDGs to a new set of Global Development Priorities’

    On the last day of her visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan UNDP Administrator Ms. Helen Clark made a key-note presentation to students and professors at Tashkent’s University of World Economy and Diplomacy. Her speech showed her appreciation of Uzbekistan’s continued commitment to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by the end of 2015. It also highlighted the need for continued collaboration and cooperation, in order to guarantee the nation’s positive human development trends persist into the post-2015 era.

    UNDP Administrator Helen Clark’s visit to Tashkent’s Earthquake Simulation Complex

    UNDP Administrator Helen Clark and Mr. Martin Taschner, Deputy Head of ECHO’s Unit for the European Neighbourhood, Middle East, and Central Asia will visit Tashkent’s Earthquake Simulation Complex at the Institute of Civil Defence in Tashkent City. The facility will serve to build public awareness of Uzbekistan’s vulnerability to seismic events, and educate the public on the best means of preparing for and behaving during earthquakes.
