    Rule of Law Project Launched – UNDP Administrator Helen Clark visit to the Supreme Court

    UNDP Administrator Ms. Helen Clark is attending the launch of the ‘Rule of Law Partnership’ project at the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The project is a continuation of extensive work undertaken by UNDP and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, in strengthening the efficiency and accessibility of the nation’s courts, and the population’s access to essential judiciary services.

    UNDP Administrator Helen Clark Visit to Uzbekistan

    To review achievements made by UNDP Uzbekistan and to pave the way for future initiatives, UNDP Administrator Ms. Helen Clark will visit national project sites and meet with key national partners in Uzbekistan from the 15th to the 20th of October. Her visit will include meetings with representatives of government partners and a tour to regional project sites.

    International Day for Disaster Reduction, 2014

    On the 13th of October, UNDP joined the Ministry of Emergency Situations in hosting a celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR). The day’s exhibition, inauguration ceremony and concert drew attention to the need for disaster preparedness, especially among Uzbekistan’s older citizenry.

    HCFC Project Inception Workshop

    An inception workshop for the joint project ‘Initial Implementation of Accelerated Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) Phase Out in the Countries with Economies in Transition - Uzbekistan’ took place on the 25th of September. The event was organised by project partners including the State Committee for Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the United Nations Development Programme. It was an opportunity to recognise UNDP’s continued efforts in Uzbekistan to limit the nation’s contribution to the depletion of the Ozone Layer, and to discuss plans to ensure this effort is enhanced and sustained.

    Establishing Stronger Partnership in Rule of Law

    On the 24th of September, 2014, an official meeting between the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, and the Chairperson of Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan, took place at the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The meeting was held in order to overview achievements made in strengthening the Rule of Law in Uzbekistan, and to agree on future initiatives in this field.

    Ozone Layer Protection – the Mission Goes On

    Annually on September 16 International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer of the Earth - the date important for the international community is celebrated. This year this event is celebrated under the slogan: Ozone Layer Protection – the Mission Goes On. On September 16 a press-conference dedicated to celebration of the International Ozone Day was held in the Poytakht business center. This event was co-hosted by the State Committee for Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Global Environmental Facility. This event was attended by the officials of the ministries, agencies, public and private sector of Uzbekistan, international organizations, and the media.

    Effective communication: a key to good governance

    Effective communication for collaborative decision making, effective interaction with citizens, making successful public appearances and speeches, confidence building, nonverbal communication and body language were among the main topics addressed and discussed during the Interpersonal and Social Communication Skills Training, organized by UNDP Uzbekistan for city/district khokimiyat officials of Tashkent region. The Training was led by Dr. Alisher Faizullaev, a professional trainer with profound experience in social communication, public speaking and negotiations.

    The first-ever HIV Hotline is launched

    Today, we are launching the first-ever HIV Hotline in Uzbekistan. The Tashkent AIDS Center will provide technical assistance in partnership with a UNDP project working to strengthen national capacities to address emerging challenges in fighting the spread of AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Hotline is symbolically named as ‘Life Line’.

    Cooperation for Promoting the Rights of People Living with Disabilities

    On June 30, 2014 the UN agencies in Uzbekistan in partnership with civil society organisations representing the interests of persons with disabilities, held a joint meeting, whose main aim was to identify perspective areas of cooperation between DPOs and UN agencies on disability issues. The meeting was organised within the framework of the thematic group on social protection of the UNDAF.

    UNDP Project to Improve Water Use on Karmana District Farms

    The Zarafshan River Basin is a region with a significant population of 5 million people, and also a large quantity of agricultural land use, but faces significant difficulties in ensuring that the farmers have access to the water they require to maintain their fields. While 84 per cent of the basin’s water resources are used in agriculture, more than 50 per cent of this resource is lost through the use of traditional but inefficient irrigation practices.
