National Schedule in Biodiversity in Support of the Implementation of the CBD Strategic Plan in Uzbekistan in 2011-2020

Project Goal

One of Uzbekistan's unique species
UNDP in Uzbekistan: The National Schedule in Biodiversity will play an important role in preserving endangered species native to Uzbekistan

The ‘National Biodiversity Planning to Support Implementation of the Convention for Biological Diversity 2011-2020 Strategic Plan in Uzbekistan’ project supports the Government of Uzbekistan in meeting its obligations within the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Since the 7th of July 1995, Uzbekistan has been a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Project addresses the country’s need to continue to fulfil its obligations under the CBD, with a particular focus on the Convention’s Article 6 and the CBD COP Decision X/2 , and will contribute to the country's efforts in implementing the CBD Strategic Plan from 2011 to 2020 at a national level.

The project is working to create measurable goals in biodiversity conservation and its sustainable use. It is also addressing the challenges faced and utilising the opportunities available within efforts to adapt and strengthen the resilience of national ecosystems to climate change.
The project’s goals are to create national targets for biodiversity, corresponding to the global Aichi Targets, to review the National Strategy and Action plan for Biodiversity Conservation (NBSAP) in order to ensure its compliance with the CBD strategic plan, and to help national partners raise funds and improve accountability for the Convention and the national Clearing-House Mechanism.

Our Results

  • Revised the NBSAP with the integration of new elements, including those increasing the importance of the value of ecosystem services, and those strengthening the adaptability and stronger resilience of ecosystems to climate change;
  • Established a governing body for the implementation of the NBSAP, and both national and international strategic partnerships;
  • Developed a strategy for raising the funds needed to help implement the NBSAP;
  • Reviewed the country’s biodiversity planning process, with the broad participation of all stakeholders;
  • Developed national biodiversity targets, in accordance with the Aichi Targets;
  • Prepared the Fifth National Report under the CBD for 2013;
  • Enhanced the Clearing-House Mechanism as an efficient, user friendly and easily-updated web resource.
