Protecting the Ozone Layer and Reducing Global Warming

6 novembre 2017

The report (in English, French and Spanish) summarizes the impact of UNDP-supported activities to implement the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, notes linkages with global efforts to achieve sustainable development, and charts the way forward. It also summarizes the results and lessons learned from 9 case studies covering Bangladesh, China, Georgia, India, Mexico, Swaziland, foam sector technology transfer between Mexico, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, low-carbon refrigeration sector technology transfer between Brazil and Latin America/Caribbean and Portuguese-speaking Africa, and regional technology transfer and capacity building for CEITs (Belarus, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan).

By September 2014, UNDP had assisted 120 partner countries access $690.6 million in funding from the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (for Article 5 developing countries) and $42.5 million from the Global Environment Facility (for non-Article 5 countries) to eliminate ozone depleting chemicals. This has resulted in the elimination of 67,870 tonnes of ODS while simultaneously reducing 5.08 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions. And of the 2,331 completed projects, over one thousand were with private sector entities including hundreds of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
