UNDP at 50: An investment in UN’s key role in development
New York City - As it marks 50 years at the frontlines of international development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) should be seen as an investment in the UN’s critical role in helping to build a world free of poverty and inequality, said UNDP Administrator Helen Clark.
“So often, leaders say to us: UNDP is the face of the UN in our country,” said Helen Clark, closing a Ministerial Meeting to mark the organisation’s anniversary.
Representatives of more than 120 countries, including Presidents, Prime Ministers and Ministers from over 80 UN Member States, met today in the UN’s General Assembly in New York to chart a course for the future of global development. They were involved in high-level debates on how to translate ambitious global commitments into concrete action and results, and shared their visions on making the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) a reality.
“We are respected for our expertise, our political neutrality, and for always supporting national ownership,” she added.
Discussions during the Ministerial Meeting, she said, “strongly suggest that there is a shared understanding of the road ahead for development and for UNDP as a trusted and strategic partner.”
“It is a testament to the last five decades of partnership that so many senior Ministers and Heads of Government have travelled to New York to mark this important milestone for UNDP,” she said.
“For 50 years, UNDP has been working on the frontlines of development, advocating for change and connecting countries to the knowledge, experience, and resources they need to help people build better lives. The world has changed immeasurably in that time, and UNDP has changed with it.”
“But the core mission of UNDP is more relevant than ever – that is, to support countries to eradicate poverty in a way which simultaneously reduces inequality and exclusion, while protecting the planet on which we all depend.”
