NEW YORK – The 12th annual meeting of the UNDP Civil Society Advisory Committee concluded yesterday after two days of discussions on how to strengthen UNDP’s engagement with civil society, including in relation to the implementation of the SDGs.

The Committee discussed the preliminary results of a mapping of UNDP’s support for civic engagement, and offered its full support to the revision of the UNDP Corporate Strategy on Civil Society and Civic Engagement, that is to begin in 2016.

The deliberations also noted the central role of civil society in building the resilience of communities and countries, in both the prevention of and response to crisis, including in addressing the root causes of conflict-related migration.

The importance of UNDP’s role in protecting and expanding civic space was also strongly emphasized.

UNDP Administrator Helen Clark pledged, “UNDP remains committed to strengthening our efforts to work with and advance the meaningful participation of women, youth, persons with disabilities, marginalized groups and indigenous peoples.”

The Committee also met with members of the UNDP Executive Board emphasizing the importance of a strong UNDP, particularly in light of its coordinating role of the UN development system.

Created in 2000, the UNDP Civil Society Advisory Committee – which this year brought together a group of 11 international civil society leaders from diverse constituencies - serves as a strategic advisory body to UNDP senior management on key issues of policy and strategy. At this meeting, agreement was reached on new objectives and operational modalities to strengthen the Committee’s advisory functions.

Outgoing co-chairs, Myrna Cunningham-Kain (Nicaragua) and Antti Pentikäinen (Finland) announced the appointment of Radhika Balakrishnan (India/USA) and Wael Hmaidan (Lebanon) as the new co-chairs of the Civil Society Advisory Committee. A full list of current committee members and their biographies are available online.
