UNDP and the Gulf Cooperation Council join forces to promote development in the Arab States RegionSep 28, 2015
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) signed a memorandum of understanding to intensify collaboration for human development, jointly boost resilience and support recovery from crisis across the Arab States Region.
The MoU commits the two institutions to share knowledge and expertise relating to development and resilience across the region. This includes joint action in training, capacity building, and staff exchange; as well as organization of conferences, seminars and workshops.
“UNDP and the Gulf Cooperation Council are committed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals across the Arab States Region,” said Helen Clark, Administrator of UNDP. “This partnership with the Gulf Cooperation Council will allow UNDP to offer stronger support to Arab countries striving towards these important objectives.”
His Excellency Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, GCC Secretary-General, remarked that the new MoU is an important step forward in the ongoing collaboration with UNDP. “The GCC is committed to supporting resilience and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the GCC Member States,” said His Excellency Al Zayani.
The agreement comes on the heels of world leaders’ adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global vision to put people and planet on a sustainable path by 2030. The SDGs, adopted on 25 September, 2015 during the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly, will form the bedrock of a new development agenda that can set the world on a course of action to end poverty, transform lives and protect the planet.
“Making concrete progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals is fundamental for the future of the Arab States region,” said Sima Bahous, Assistant Secretary-General and Director of UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Arab States. “Working together with the GCC will allow UNDP to more effectively support the Arab States to build resilience, move towards sustainable development and usher in an era of peace and prosperity.”
