Romário, Deco, Karembeu and Vieri first to join Match Against Poverty in Brazil
GENEVA – 29 October 2012: Nearly 20 football players have confirmed their participation in the 10th edition of the Match Against Poverty taking place for the first time in Brazil, on 19 December, at the Arena of Grêmio in Porto Alegre. As Goodwill Ambassadors of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ronaldo and Zidane will each choose and lead his own team to compete against the other.
Ronaldo’s team already has Neymar and Lucas, current stars of the Brazilian National team, as well as Romario, one of the greatest strikers of all time. Also in Porto Alegre will be the forwards Bebeto and Denilson, and the defenders Belletti, Serginho and Roque Junior, who recently retired. Other stars such as Deco, Italian Christian Vieri, Argentinian Santiago Solari and Portuguese Pedro Pauleta will also be in Porto Alegre for the match. Christian Karembeu,(France) Michel Salgado (Spain) and Hidetoshi Nakata (Japan) are other former players who have confirmed their participation in the match.
Luiz Felipe Scolari, World Cup winner coach for Brazil in 2002, and Mano Menezes, current coach of the Brazilian National team, will be the team captains. The Italian legend Pierluigi Collina, who refereed eight of nine matches held so far, will again be the referee of this year.
"I could never deny an invitation like this. Fighting poverty in Brazil is a cause that I always embraced. It will be a great pleasure to participate in this initiative alongside my friend Ronaldo. I'm sure the match will be a great success, "said Bebeto.
The match in Porto Alegre follows the example of the last nine editions in which the funds raised support specific projects in different countries that are facing difficult challenges. "On the tenth game, we'll use the income collected to support solutions for my country and for a programme in Africa in which Brazil participates actively," said Ronaldo.
The Match is supported by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). More top international names are expected to confirm in the coming weeks.
