Since March 2007, UNDP has been responsible for supporting peaceful, transparent and credible elections in the country. To this end, an electoral assistance project was implemented, financed by a basket fund that aims to collect contributions from the partners that have signed agreements with UNDP. In this regard, UNDP, which coordinates electoral assistance initiatives, has been supporting efforts to mobilize resources, playing the role of facilitator for the use of these funds.
Through the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund, the United Nations, in partnership with the European Union, has been strengthening the capacity of the special forces (FOSSEPEL) in securing the electoral process. The U.N. has given out communications equipment, computers, vehicles (including motorcycles) as well as equipment for law enforcement.

• Printers and other equipment to produce voting cards and the provision of technical assistance to process the stored data;
• Purchase of 20,000 ballot boxes and other materials (seals, indelible ink, electoral kits) and awareness raising through extensive media and outreach campaigns;
• On-going technical assistance for MATAP,CENI and all stakeholders; support for data entry by staff recruited by CENI and MATAP.
