#GivingTuesday 2013: celebrate volunteerism
This year, UNDP joined the #GivingTuesday campaign for the first time, adding a global dimension to this powerful day of volunteerism and philanthropy. UNDP was one of over 10,000 groups and organizations from all parts of society that joined #GivingTuesday in support of charitable giving. The impact: in the United States, charitable giving rose with 164% compared to last year.
Actions speak louder
Our staff members in country offices across the world also volunteered their time in local communities and joined the movement, showing enormous enthusiasm for this day of giving back.
Wide range of activities
Opportunities to donate time, knowledge and energy on #GivingTuesday are endless and our country offices did not waste a minute in coming up with creative endeavours. Our Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, for example, partnered with the NGO Second Chance to collect donations for people living in Bangkok’s slum area. The people from the Klong Toey slum received “home treasures” (clothing and house appliances) that they can sell in their thrift shops. In Bujumbura, Burundi, the hospitals have been sorely lacking in blood, so our #GivingTuesday there was all about giving them precious lifeblood – figuratively and literally. The focus in Bangladesh, lastly, is on sharing knowledge and expertise about ‘giving back’. Experts, local people, UN Volunteers and UNDP all met to increase our understanding of what philanthropy really means.
Doing offline, showing online
And these are just a few examples. Volunteerism and philanthropy have a million faces – faces of the communities we work with. To show these faces to the rest of the world we also collected and shared photos, videos and stories across the internet and social media, turning Giving Tuesday into a powerful celebration of giving.
