Magdy Martínez-Solimán, UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Assistant Administrator addressing the Concert for NYC Climate Week Kick-off at City Winery, New York

Concert for climate action aimed to maintain momentum for international efforts to tackle climate change.

New York, 19 September – UNDP, together with Pathway to Paris and 350.org, held a special concert yesterday at City Winery in New York City. The concert, timed to coincide with both the start of NYC Climate Week and the UN General Assembly, focused on maintaining momentum on the Paris Agreement and reminding world leaders and the public that only action, not words, will keep global temperatures in check.

Special guests included Ms. Isabella Lövin, Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden; Magdy Martínez-Solimán, UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Assistant Administrator; and Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org and former staff writer of The New Yorker.

Over a dozen musicians performed at the concert, including Patrick Watson, David Johansen with Mercury Rev; Martha Wainwright; Xylouris White; Lucy Roche and Suzzy Roche; Jesse Paris Smith and Rebecca Foon; and Nicole Atkins.

“Advocacy is a critical element in the fight against climate change and was, in fact, a key component that led to the adoption of the Paris Agreement,” noted Magdy Martínez-Solimán. “The concert was a strong reminder that climate change has not been forgotten. The Agreement is signed but the real work continues. Let’s hope we can help maintain momentum for many years to come.”

The Paris Agreement on climate change was adopted in December 2015 and signed by world leaders in April. The UN Secretary General has invited countries to submit their ‘instruments of ratification’ during a special event on 21 September. A quick ratification would lead to the Agreement ‘entering force’ sooner than expected and help advance climate efforts.
