The Executive Board of three UN development agencies opens 2014 annual session with a focus on improving coherence and results
Geneva--An intergovernmental corporate governance structure that oversees the work of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Population Fund and the UN Office of Project Services opened its Annual Session in Geneva today.
Peter Thomson, President of the Executive Board and Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations, opened the 2014 session by recalling the imperative to help over one billion people in the world living in poverty, and citing UNDP's results and impact in the Pacific region.
UNDP Administrator Helen Clark said the Board meeting was taking place in the midst of very important times for UNDP. "The new Strategic Plan is being rolled out across headquarters, regional centres, and country offices, where our programmes are being aligned to the plan," she said.
Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of UNFPA, said the Board was also meeting at an important time for the development community. “We need to focus on delivering results for women, adolescent girls and young people, especially those who face challenging circumstances, whether through poverty or humanitarian crisis.”
During the week, the Board will discuss, debate and deliberate upon a number of specific decisions that will determine evolving policy for the organizations. All decisions are published on the Executive Board website at www.undp.org/execbrd
Comprised of 36 Governments, the Executive Board meets three times a year, in January, June and September, to review and monitor the work of the three UN organizations.
