In a world of 7 billion, fight against poverty and inequality remains critical
As the world’s population reaches an estimated 7 billion by the end of October 2011, sustainable development and the struggle against poverty and inequality are key issues countries continue to face.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is partnering closely with the UN Population Fund’s innovative campaign to build awareness and inspire action around the opportunities and challenges of a world of seven billion people.
Our campaign “Take One Action Against Poverty” showcases the small and big actions that help end poverty worldwide. The campaign encourages people to share their stories and photographs through email, Twitter and Facebook.
On 27 October, we will also highlight stories about the global fight against poverty and inequality. Zinédine Zidane, UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, recently visited the West African nation of Mali to highlight the country’s efforts to reduce poverty. His trip included visits to women and youth empowerment projects, including income-generating initiatives amongst Mali’s poorest population.
Zidane and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Ronaldo are also mobilizing their friends for the Match Against Poverty, taking place in Hamburg, Germany on 13th December, 2011. Most of the proceeds of this year's Match against Poverty will go towards addressing the ongoing food crisis in the Horn of Africa, where more than 13 million people have been left in need by famine, drought, conflict and high food prices.
“A secure and peaceful future for our world requires that all have access to sustainable sources of food and water, and the means to enjoy a decent living,” said UNDP Chief, Helen Clark. “Investing in sustainable development is no longer a question of choice. It is the only option.”
