Helen Clark: New UN Entity, UN Women

Sep 15, 2010

Statement from Helen Clark, UNDP Administrator

The United Nations General Assembly voted unanimously on 2 July 2010 to create a new UN entity, known as UN Women  to accelerate progress in meeting the needs of women and girls worldwide.  Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced the appointment of  Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile, as the head of UN Women.

I am delighted by this appointment and look forward to working closely with Michelle Bachelet in her new capacity as Under Secretary-General  and head of UN Women. She brings to the position tremendous leadership skills, and a passion for and  track record on advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.

We at UNDP look forward to working closely with Ms. Bachelet and UN Women to achieve our common objectives.
