UNDP, Damascus University launch degree in risk & disaster management

Jul 14, 2010

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Damascus University have launched a Master of Science degree program in Risk & Disaster Management.  The university will benefit from a grant that will help to provide scientific materials, a library and equipment.

The master’s programme will cover issues such as earthquakes, fires and environmental impact, and assess modern approaches – such as Geographic Information Systems and communications technology – to helping communities become more resilient to disasters.  In addition, Damascus University will be able to coordinate and work with other institutions specialized in disaster risk management.

Cooperation between UNDP and Syria’s Ministry of Local Administration (MoLA) in the field of disaster reduction goes back eight years thanks to a project on “Strengthening Capacity Development for Disaster Risk Management,” which links disaster management work to scientific knowledge.  The establishment of a postgraduate degree in this field is the newest outcome of this project.
