11th Match Against Poverty to kick off in Switzerland

Football legends and UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors Ronaldo and Zinédine Zidane are set to kick off  the 11th annual Match Against Poverty on March 4th at 8:00PM CET in STADE DE SUISSE National Stadium in Bern, Switzerland.

Proceeds raised from the soccer Match will help UNDP’s recovery efforts in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most devastating storms in history.

Ronaldo and Zinédine Zidane have mobilized their team of internationally renowned football players for a friendly match against the Bern professional football club, the BSC Young Boys and Friends.

“Through the 11th edition in Bern we hope to be able to raise both awareness and funds for the people in need in the Philippines” said Zinédine Zidane. “Working together in support of the victims of Typhoon Haiyan we will all be winners in the Match Against Poverty.”

UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Marta de Silva will participate in the match in Bern, as well as football stars Ruud Gullit, Luís Figo, Fabio Cannavaro and Patrick Vieira, Deco, Pavel Nedvěd, Roberto Carlos. Legendary six-time World Referee winner Pierluigi Collina, will referee the match.

Two thirds of the match proceeds will be used to bolster recovery efforts in the Philippines, where more than 5,000 people lost their lives to Typhoon Haiyan, with almost 1 million people displaced and an estimated further 11.8 million affected. To bolster the local economy UNDP has already begun a cash-for-work project clearing debris in Tacloban, and will continue its efforts to help those who have lost homes, businesses and jobs as a result of the typhoon.

The match, which will be televised globally, click here for a list of stations is supported by both football’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
