United Nations personnel working in Afghanistan were killed after demonstrators attacked a UN compound on Friday in the country’s northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

“I am deeply shocked by the horrific killings of UN colleagues and security personnel,” said Helen Clark, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). “On behalf of UNDP, I extend our condolences to the families and friends of those who died. We salute the many dedicated  people in the UN working with the people of Afghanistan. We grieve with all our colleagues in Afghanistan today.

“All UNDP staff members in Afghanistan are accounted for. The UN is assessing the situation after this devastating attack, and taking the necessary measures to ensure the safety of all its staff,” Helen Clark said.
