Response to media coverage of shelters in Afghanistan

Feb 15, 2011

UNDP Afghanistan works very closely with government ministries, particularly the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, towards improving the situation for Afghan women.

Through our partnership with the Government, from 2007 to 2010, total expenditure was US$6.3 million on a range of gender-related projects.

Projects included setting up Legal Help Centres in Herat and Balkh provinces to support vulnerable women; providing technical and financial support to the Ministry of Women's Affairs; raising awareness of women’s rights through training of religious leaders at community level.

Many other projects and programmes are also being actioned with our government partners, including training officials on gender-sensitive budgeting.

UNDP has no involvement in operating women’s shelters that have been the recent subject of international media coverage.
