Interaction with the media at the Africa-China conference

Nov 2, 2010

UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met with the media on Tuesday 2 November 2010, at the end of her two-day visit to Addis Ababa, where she attended the Africa-China Poverty Reduction and Development Conference.

The Administrator highlighted the importance of social protection as a key focus of the discussions she had had that day with Ethiopian women leaders and groups. In particular, she said many elderly women who had lost their partners in a three decade-long civil war were vulnerable.

The administrator also stressed the potential impact of South-South cooperation in helping to promote growth that translated into actual poverty reduction. China and Ethiopia were cited as examples of growth leading to poverty reduction.

A second press conference was jointly held by State Minister Ahmed Shide (Ministry of Finance and Economic Development – Ethiopia); Tegegnework Gettu, Director, Regional Bureau for Africa; and Huang Chengwei, Deputy Director General – IPRCC.
