Nov 2, 2010

UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met on 1 November with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on the margins of the Africa-China Poverty Reduction and Development Conference.

Helen Clark congratulated the Prime Minister on Ethiopia’s new five-year strategy, the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), which aims to bring the nation closer to becoming a middle-income country in 2025.

Miss Clark and Prime Minister Meles also welcomed the creation, in February, of a UN-appointed high-level advisory group on climate change, tasked with drawing up practical proposals to boost both short- and long-term financing for climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in developing countries. Meles Zenawi is co-chairing the advisory group.

Helen Clark also met with the Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, who thanked UNDP for its support of Ethiopia's poverty reduction effort. The organization has been providing assistance to help Ethiopia achieve the Plan for Accelerated and Sustained Development to End Poverty (PASDEP).
