Sep 29, 2009

Cairo – UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met yesterday with Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif on the second day of her official trip to Egypt.

Helen Clark discussed with  the Prime Minister the positive results of the stimulus package which the Government of Egypt had implemented to take the country through  the financial crisis. The package included important social protection measures and public works spending.  They also discussed the upcoming review of the MDGs in 2010, and the need for comprehensive strategies to tackle the challenge of climate change.

Helen Clark also met with First Lady Suzanne Mubarak on Sunday.  They discussed the First Lady’s work on raising the status of women in Egypt and the opportunity in the 2010 MDG review to focus on the particular needs of women. Helen Clark suggested that women are also particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and that women's voices need to be heard on the importance of tackling the problem.
