    Democratic governance is a cornerstone of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) work as it is instrumental to empowering nations and communities in 177 countries and territories around the world and advancing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

  • Results: Democratic Republic of the Congo

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) works with 30 partners in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - including the Government of DRC and civil society organizations - to address key issues pertaining to democratic governance and poverty reduction.

    UNDP is working with Egypt to consolidate democratic gains by promoting an inclusive process that respects the rights of all citizens; addressing urgent economic needs of the most vulnerable; and answering the need for strong accountable institutions.

  • Results: Ethiopia

    Over the past five years, Ethiopia's economic growth has led to increased incomes and better access to healthcare and education for its people. Yet, poverty is a persistent challenge and continues to be exacerbated by the country's vulnerability to natural disasters and changing rain patterns.

  • Results: Haiti

    Haiti's ongoing humanitarian crisis following the massive earthquake of January 2010 is also equally a development crisis, since recovering from the devastation the earthquake caused will require rebuilding in all sectors.

  • Results: Iraq

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has worked to support the Government and people of Iraq in their transition towards reconciliation, peace and stability since 1976 in the areas of democratic governance; poverty reduction; crisis prevention and recovery, and energy and environment. Since 2003, UNDP has also been supporting emergency physical rehabilitation projects and has been enhancing the quality of basic services, including water and electricity.

    Since 2002, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has worked in Lebanon to make government institutions stronger, more reliable and more transparent.

  • Results: Liberia

    In 2009, UNDP helped Liberia to make significant strides towards developing a peaceful, citizen-respecting society by building effective, responsive and decentralized government institutions, and by fighting poverty in the most vulnerable communities.

  • Results: Libya

    As a key partner to Libya during its period of transition, UNDP quickly reopened its office when the civil war ended, and refocused its programming on elections, early recovery, civil society support, rule of law and governance.

  • Results: Poverty Reduction

    UNDP fights poverty and works toward achievement of the MDGs through advocacy; diagnosis of existing problems; support to pro-poor country-level plans and policies; and pursuing a programme of inclusive development.

  • Results: Rule of Law

    UNDP rule of law programmes include providing legal empowerment to the poor and marginalized groups, including women, young people, the disabled and migrants; improving justice and security institutions and access to justice; and helping communities to deal with a legacy of conflict through methods such as truth commissions, the prosecution of conflict-related crimes and establishing community-based violence prevention initiatives.

    Since 1991, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been helping the people of Somalia to recover from years of conflict while setting the country on the path to development.

  • Results: South Sudan

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in South Sudan has focused on helping the Government of South Sudan to build state institutions leading up first to the January 2011 referendum on self-determination, and then to the declaration of independence on 9 July, 2011.

  • Results: Spain UNDP Trust Fund

    The Spain-UNDP Trust Fund was established in April, 2007 to support the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) democratic governance and poverty reduction initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean.

  • Results: Sudan

    UNDP is helping the people of Sudan overcome the consequences of decades of conflict, focusing on preventing future conflicts in the country, as well as building institutions and governance foundations that will set the stage for future development.

  • Results: The Philippines

    In support of the country’s poverty reduction strategy, the work of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) focuses on developing policies that help the poor, promote inclusive growth and advance the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
