Document Summary

The 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that brought to an end two decades of civil war in Sudan stipulated that a referendum on self-determination for South Sudan and a referendum on the status of Abyei should be held simultaneously on 9 January, 2011.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) established the United Nations Integrated Referendum and Electoral Division (UNIRED) as the main conduit for coordinated and coherent support to the two referenda processes. UNIRED assisted with all aspects of the referenda processes, including security provision, complaints and appeals processing, civic education, registration and polling.
