This report was prepared by UNDP based on the results of a project funded by the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol and submitted in October 2010.

There is an urgent need to assess potential alternative technologies for replacing HCFC-141b in terms of properties, costs, availability, sustainability and environmental performance.  Decision 55/43 by the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol reflects this by promoting pilot projects aimed at validating technologies in a developing country (A5) context.

This report describes the outcome of an assessment on the safe use of methyl formate (ecomate® or MF) to replace HCFC‐141b in polyurethane foams.  The use of MF based systems in PU foams has been evaluated at Purcom Quimica Ltda in Barueri/SP, Brazil and Quimiuretanos Zadro SA de CV in San Francisco del Rincon/GTO, Mexico with the objective of assessing its performance compared with HCFC‐141b based systems and establishing the feasibility of its use in MLF projects.

This report analyzed the viability and potential of using methylal (“ML”) as HCFC alternative in polyurethane foam on the basis of trials and pilots at Arinos Quimica Ltda (“Arinos”) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which is a large independent system house producing polyurethane systems.

This report analyzed the viability and potential of using hydrocarbons as HCFC alternative in polyurethane foam.  Hydrocarbon technology is available world-wide, but its implementation requires considerable capital outlays, mainly related to addressing safety issues.  On the other side, operating costs are generally somewhat lower than HCFCs. The objective of this pilot project has been to assess options to lower these capital costs without compromising safety or operating costs.
