Legal Empowerment Strategies at Work

November 15, 2015

This report examines ten case studies of how development interventions can support access to land rights for marginalized groups, particularly women, and enable poor informal sector workers to better access legal protection and economic empowerment. Drawing on the experiences of poor and marginalized groups in select situations in Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, India, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, the study examines ‘what works and doesn’t work’ in initiatives that aim to overcome or reduce the obstacles the poor and marginalized face in setting up and running their businesses, and protecting their property rights and access to land and forests, while situating these initiatives within their particular institutional and policy contexts. Based on research across these cases, it concludes with recommendations for policy and programming towards transformative change. The study was sponsored by Danida as part of an agreement with UNDP.
