Gender Justice

Sexual and gender-based violence has a devastating, long-term effect on the lives of victims, their families and communities, and impedes development progress. Where sexual and gender-based violence persist, women and girls are disproportionately affected.

UNDP works with national partners to increase their capacities to prevent and respond to Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV). This includes efforts to foster a culture of awareness of the ills of SGBV, create and employ preventative mechanisms, fight impunity for these crimes, mobilize men in advocacy efforts, and provide survivors with psychosocial and socioeconomic support. Beyond tailored approaches to address SGBV, UNDP supports national and local authorities to empower women and girls through gender-conscious justice and security services. For example, UNDP works with state and non-state actors to increase women’s participation and leadership in justice and security institutions and to develop and apply inclusive legal frameworks.

As part of these efforts to promote the rights and participation of women and girls, UNDP works with UN partners, including UN Women and UNFPA. UNDP also maintains close working partnerships with the UN Team of Experts on Rule of Law/Sexual Violence in Conflict as well as the UN Action against Conflict Related Sexual Violence.
