Local Governance and Local Development

Local governance remains the most accessible level of engagement with the State for the vast majority of people. It is the channel closest to the citizens for accessing basic services, for participating in the public decisions that affect their lives, and for exercising their rights and obligations. Effective local governance is essential for improving quality of life, reducing inequality in all its forms, and enhancing relations between people and public institutions.

UNDP helps countries develop an effective local governance and local development agenda in urban and rural areas, including in crisis setting. Our local governance and development process involves facilitating democratic accountability, strengthening rule of law and security, building administrative capacity for management development and service delivery, enhancing fiscal resources and ownership, equipping collection and management of spatial information and accelerating social capital formation.

To ensure engagement and ownership, in close cooperation with local and regional governments and other local actors, UNDP supports countries and communities in the localization of the 2030 Agenda.
