Civic engagement

Fully realizing the sustainable development agenda requires not only making progress equitable and broad-based, but also enabling people to become active participants in that process. UNDP therefore attaches critical importance to the promotion of civic engagement.

Civic engagement can pursue a broad range of objectives, such as: influencing policies, holding public authorities accountable, transforming attitudes and cultural norms; and complementing the state delivery of services, among others.

UNDP promotes an enabling environment for civic action and develops the capacity of civil society actors. We also promote the meaningful participation in public life of groups that have historically experienced discrimination, such as indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and the LGBTI.

In this regard, UNDP hosts the Technical Secretariats of the UN Partnership to Promote the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) and of the UN Indigenous Peoples Partnership (UNIPP).

At the global level, UNDP has established a Civil Society Advisory Committee (CSAC) which brings together civil society leaders to advise UNDP’s leadership on key matters of strategy and policy.
