Disaster recovery

While the priority is always to protect people and communities and to prevent crisis, many countries are nonetheless affected by disaster. This impacts lives and livelihoods, stunts and often erases development progress, and traps people in cycles of poverty and vulnerability, leaving them only more exposed to future disasters.

Slide
Nepal: With support from UNDP, Nepalese farmers impacted by the 2015 earthquake are able to harvest cardamom, allowing for increased income and livelihood support.
Slide
Ecuador: Crews in Ecuador begin the process of demolishing damaged and unsafe infrastructure from the 2016 earthquake.
Slide
Nepal: In order to build back better and ensure that recovery is risk-informed, safer building techniques are shared with local communities and masons following the Nepal earthquake.
Slide
Philippines: A woman in Talcoban, Philippines supports debris clearing following Typhoon Haiyan in 2014. UNDP, the World Bank and the European Union subsequently supported the Government in post-disaster needs assessment and recovery planning.

Recovery helps people to get back on the road to development. UNDP supports recovery that helps people build back better, and that reduces risk and builds resilience. By partnering with national governments, NGOs, civil society groups and communities, UNDP emphasizes the human and social aspects of recovery. Since 2005, UNDP has spent more than US $1 billion on recovery, providing technical and financial assistance for post-disaster recovery programming in 112 countries.

Three sub-sections:

  1. Post-Disaster Needs Assessments
  2. Planning and Implementing Recovery
  3. Recovery Preparedness
