Turkmen journalists increased their capacity building in public awareness on electoral processes
The training for local mass media and communications staff from public organizations and political parties on awareness of election process was conducted in November under the UNDP project of Enhancing Electoral System and Processes in Turkmenistan supporting the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Turkmenistan.
During the training conducted by International Consultant Ms. Ruta Avulyte, participants discussed international experience and national practices on the role of mass media in preparation and organization of elections. Participants were shared with their knowledge and technical skills in the field of applying international standards on mass media activities, application of the modern informational technologies and internet resources in preparation and organization of parliamentary elections on multi-party basis. Total number of participants was 20 persons, including 8 women. There were representatives of newspapers from Ashgabat city and regional newspapers, newspapers of political parties and public organizations, as well as representatives from national TV channels.
As noted by representative from local news paper “Neutral Turkmenistan”, Ms. Irina Imamkuliyeva, “Training on the role of mass media and public outreach on election processes, conducted by UNDP International Consultant Ms. Ruta Avulyte Moreira, increased knowledge and capacity building of Turkmen journalists in creating their own models of informational materials taking into account international principles of working of mass media during election processes.”
The Central Election Commission noted that this activity increased capacity building of CEC representatives in implementation of newly adopted Unified Election Code and integration of wide range of interested parties and social groups to strengthen election processes in the country.
“Enhancing Electoral system and processes in Turkmenistan” Project is jointly implemented by the UNDP Turkmenistan and the CEC of Turkmenistan with financial support of the British Embassy in Turkmenistan. The project aims at supporting the country’s sustainable development in the process of its democratization, especially in the field of elections.
