Guards’ training focuses on priority areas
Prison guard Reinaldo Barreto de Jesus (pictured above) asks a question during a training held last month for Timor-Leste’s 35 prison guards.
The training, which covered criminal law, parole, ethics and psychology, was supported by UNDP’s Justice System Programme (JSP).
“[These] are the most important priority areas that [guards] should know about, in order to be able to apply them in their day-to-day work,” said Director of the Ministry of Justice’s (MoJ) National Directorate for the Prisons Service and Probation, Helder Cosme Marcal Belo.
Since 2008, the JSP has been working with the Ministry of Justice’s Prisons Directorate to improve security and prison facilities, and to ensure that the treatment of prisoners conforms with international human rights standards.
