BANGKOK - UNDP in Thailand was recognized for its efforts to tackle climate change by the Royal Thai Government. The Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) awarded UNDP as a ‘Friend of Thailand Climate’ at an event in Bangkok on 26 September.

UNDP’s environment programme is designed to assist Thailand to increase its effectiveness in addressing climate change and environmental security. UNDP has leveraged over $20 million USD from the Global Environmental Facility and others to serve Thailand’s national priorities on low carbon and climate resilient development.

Key flagship programmes include supporting the links between climate policies to public finance, coastal community climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness, and low carbon cities.

UNDP works closely with ONEP, the national focal point of the climate change convention (UNFCCC), and other key agencies under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

“Climate change is a clear and present challenge for Thailand. Its impacts are being felt, but we also realized our capacities to alleviate and adapt to it. Thailand is making efforts to share our responsibility to mitigate the cause of climate change and to be in a better position to prepare and adapt to it,” said H.E. Wichet Kasemthongsri, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment.

Two other UN agencies under the UN Joint Team on Climate Change also received awards, namely, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Three development partners also received honors, GIZ, JICA, and USAID.

“We are thankful for the support we have from the global communities and our friends on these endeavors,” Kasemthongsri said.

The three-day Adaptation Expo Event was organized to raise public awareness on getting prepared for climate change impacts.
