    New Programme on ‘Governance for Local Economic Development’ comes into operation

    UNDP Sri Lanka, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs initiated the new ‘Governance for Local Economic Development’ (GLED) Programme. This new five year Programme will focus on strengthening governance capacities of sub-national level governance institutions, civil society, the private sector and communities in order to foster access to enhanced public sector service delivery and improve socio-economic opportunities and social cohesion across lagging and vulnerable regions in the North and East, while securing their transition from recovery to development.

    New programme on ‘Strengthening Enforcement of Law, Access to Justice and Social Integration in Sri Lanka’ comes into operation

    UNDP, in partnership with four Ministries of the Government of Sri Lanka, has initiated a new Programme, “Strengthening Enforcement of Law, Access to Justice and Social Integration in Sri Lanka (SELAJSI)”. The new Programme builds on the support provided by UNDP over the past eight years through its Access to Justice Projects that contributed to increasing the awareness of local communities about their rights and the legal and judicial mechanisms to protect them.

    Newly built Fish Collection Centre in Mullaitivu to ensure better quality, production and income

    The newly established Fish Collection Centre in Kallapadu in the Mullaitivu District, built with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and financial assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency, was ceremoniously opened and handed-over to the Fisheries’ Cooperative Societies Union (FCSU) on May 5, 2013.

    Over 200 students from Northern, North Central and Eastern provinces board the Peace Train

    Over 200 students representing 21 schools from the Northern, North Central and Eastern Provinces boarded the Peace Train from Badulla to Kandy marking the end of the Finale event of the Twinning Schools Programme (TSP) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), an initiative which aims to improve interaction, understanding and co-existence between young people from different backgrounds and regions in Sri Lanka.

    UNDP transfers Early Recovery Coordination GIS capacity to Jaffna planning units

    Following the end of the 30 year conflict, Jaffna’s District Planning Unit was faced with the tremendous task of leading the process of recovery and development. Having seen the types of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and databases used in other districts to facilitate planning, the Jaffna District Officers felt that their work would greatly benefit from adoption of similar systems.

    Recovery of Resettled Communities in Vasanthapuram

    With the end of the war in May 2009, Jaffna District has progressively transformed, moving from stages of early recovery to mid-term recovery and development. The region is seeing movements of populations, who are returning after years of displacement, facing resettlement that is bringing with it its own rays of hope as well as having to deal with other complications.

    30 youth complete the UNDP-Aitken Spence School of Hospitality supported training in the hospitality industry

    Thirty youth from Sri Lanka’s North, East and North-Central provinces who successfully completed the first components of their training in the hotel industry conducted by Aitken Spence Hotel Managements (Pvt) Limited, received their certificates on May 28, 2012. The training was conducted with financial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

    The new ice plant in Mullaitivu improves market penetration of local fishermen

    Mr. Arunraj, a 40 year old father of three, was displaced four times with his family since the 90’s and therefore, was forced into subsistence livelihoods and low income generating activities. With fishing being his main source of obtaining income, Mr. Arunraj struggled to restart his fishing activities soon after resettlement in 2010. He says, “I faced many challenges in marketing the fish. Due to lack of proper storage, more than 20% of the fish I caught were graded poorly and received low prices. As a result, the income from fishing was not adequate to take care of my family. I had to undertake casual labour work or borrow money to make ends meet”.

    The Women’s Leadership Development Project (WLDP)

    Despite relative gains against MDG indicators on gender parity in education and wage employment, Sri Lanka still performs poorly on women’s political participation, with women’s representation in national parliament standing at 5.6% which is among the lowest in South Asia and in the Provincial Councils (PCs) and Local Authorities (LAs) at under 3%.

    Independent evaluation of the Transition Recovery Programme and Support to Mine Action Project

    UNDP recently concluded an independent evaluation of its Transition Recovery Programme (TRP) and Support to Mine Action Project (SMAP) to assess how it was faring in contributing to UNDP Sri Lanka’s Country Programme results. The TRP is UNDP’s flagship programme and provides recovery support to the conflict affected populations in the North and East, while the SMAP provides management support to the mine action sector in Sri Lanka.

    The Pulopali West Coir Factory, located in the Pachchilaipalli DS Division in Kilinochchi District, was once abuzz with activity. With raw material, such as coconut fibre, readily available in the region, the factory provided employment to a large number of women from nearby villages.

    Celebrating Inclusive Participation on International Peace Day 2011

    Based on its theme of social cohesion, the Communities for Progress (C4P II) project celebrated International Peace Day on 21st September 2011 in Vavuniya. Over 100 children, as well as parents and teachers from Ampara, Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Polonnaruwa and Vavuniya districts participated in a variety of events held on the day aimed at promoting inclusive participation and interaction among children and adults from diverse ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.

    New veterinary centre at Thandiyadi to improve livestock production

    Providing access to improved veterinary services for livestock farmers will result in increased livestock production and profitability, while further strengthening the local livestock industry. For those living in the Vavunathivu DS Division in Batticaloa District, where livestock is the main source of income for nearly 4,000 families, an efficient veterinary service centre was a long-felt need.
