As part of Social Integration Week 2014, a street drama was organized at the Karachchi Divisional Secretariat in Kilinochchi by the Kilinochchi District participants of the Women’s Empowerment for Social Integration initiative to raise awareness on social integration and gender empowerment among communities in the area.

Opening of the Northern Provincial Centre of the Ministry of National Languages and Social Integration with the support of UNDP
Marking Social Integration Week 2014, the Northern Provincial Centre of the Ministry of National Languages and Social Integration was ceremoniously declared open by Hon. Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Minister of National Languages and Social Integration on July 15, 2014. The Centre is located in Kilinochchi.

A new climate change mitigation project to promote sustainable biomass energy production and modern bio-energy technologies in Sri Lanka commenced with an inception workshop on September 17, 2013. The project is aimed at supporting Sri Lankan industries to meet energy needs from locally sourced fuel wood derived through sustainable practices, instead of imported furnace oil, kerosene and diesel.

Adapting and coping with changes in climatic and weather patterns is important. Lack of preparedness and growing uncertainty over weather patterns is a serious issue that needs to be addressed at all levels, from village to national. “We see that weather patterns have changed, and unexpected weather related disasters have increased. My Ministry focuses on increased preparedness and improving early warning,” said Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister for Disaster Management, speaking at the Symposium on Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change, organized by the Global Environmental Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF/SGP) of UNDP.

On Friday, 7th June, Hon. Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy, officially inaugurated a programme to put forests at the heart of Sri Lanka’s strategy to tackle climate change. The programme will help Sri Lanka to prepare for an international mechanism to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+). REDD+ will be part of a future international comprehensive agreement to tackle global warming, which is currently being negotiated through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

- The use of street drama can be a powerful tool to raise awareness on social integration and gender amongst communities. As part of our Strengthening Enforcement of Law, Access to Justice and Social Integration (SELAJSI) Programme, 30 young women from the Killinochchi and Moneragala Districts were given training on the use of leadership and communication skills to promote social integration and gender empowerment. - UNDP Sri Lanka in partnership with Dialog Axiata’s Ideamart will host Sri Lanka’s first social innovation hackathon this September, titled “HackaDev: Impact through Innovation. As a first step, a prehack session was held yesterday at the Dialog Head Office where over 200 young people were briefed by specialists from UNDP on challenges around the three core pillars - Employment & Enterprise, Electronic Waste Management, and Civic Engagement.
