Northern Livelihood Development Project

What is the project about

The Northern Livelihood Development Project (N-LDP) aims to support conflict-affected communities, particularly those socially and economically excluded, in the Jaffna, Killinochchi and Mullaithivu districts to strengthen their capacities to become self-sufficient through engagement in fair and equitable livelihood opportunities, while increasing opportunities for interaction within and between communities. The project combines several approaches/models innovated and applied in the current portfolio of socio-economic recovery interventions undertaken by UNDP’s Transition Recovery Programme (TRP), and is informed by a number of best practices and lessons learned over the past four years.

What have we accomplished so far

Following six months of implementation;

  • The Project has used existing market and producer assessments to identify 13 producer organizations from the dairy, palmyra, paddy, seed paddy, fishery sectors for support. The project has also engaged the expertise of a business development service provider to undertake further market and producer assessments to identify additional units for support.
  • The Project has entered into partnership agreements with 11 of the 13 identified producer organizations and has initiated the provision of support to the same.
  • The Project is also in the process of identifying options for promoting employability and enterprise development for youth, women and socially excluded communities in order to increase economic efficiencies and generate income opportunities for excluded groups.
