UNDP is proud to have worked alongside the new Government of South Sudan and the people of Eastern Equatoria, Lakes, Unity, Upper Nile and Warrap states in building the foundations for peaceful and secure communities. By providing payams and bomas with the tools and resources they need to prevent conflict, citizens can then begin to invest in their communities, cultivate their local economies, send their children to school and realize the benefits of peace.

The UNDAF is the framework for the UN’s development assistance to South Sudan. The programmes that are in this framework are smart, ambitious and if implemented quickly, can help South Sudan to “take off” and become a prosperous, democratic, just and well governed country—exactly the kind of country that the people who voted for independence want.

UNDP acknowledges that there is no universal system of devolved government that is right for all contexts. There is a large body of knowledge about how to design systems of devolution from which we can draw comparative insights. Ultimately, however, it will fall to each country to adopt an approach that is best for its own political and economic circumstances.

These efforts demonstrate that, even with the challenges the new Republic has experienced in the first year of its Independence, there is still a strong will and increasing capacity within Government to ensure it continues to build a robust and credible base of statistical data on the complex nature of poverty, and the challenges to human development, within the world's newest nation.

UNDP supported the Government in designing a land management plan to support the five states with the highest number of returnees with re-integration, including Northern Bahr el Ghazal. With training, support, equipment, and technical advice the Government in Northern Bahr el Ghazal was able to achieve notable results.
