Governor of Northern Bar El-Ghazal State says international community should continue to support the people of South Sudan
UNDP and UNMISS recently handed over a County Support Base (CSB) Portal to the State government in the presence of the community, customary authorities and local government of Gok Machar County in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, South Sudan.

The security situation in South Sudan remains “fluid”, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the country today said, confirming that it is sending reinforcements to areas affected by the current fighting between pro- and anti-Government troops, particularly Bor, Malakal, Bentiu and Juba.

Aid agencies are preparing to scale up their work in key locations across South Sudan, as continuing clashes kill hundreds and drive tens of thousands from their homes, while the UN urged all forces to lay down their arms.

Twenty traditional leaders from across South Sudan’s ten states were trained in customary and statutory law systems, providing them with basic training on principles of human rights and women’s rights. The three-day workshop focused on providing a better understanding of customary law and identifying inconsistencies for alignment with principles of statutory courts and the Bill of Rights of the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan.

Mr. President, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen. Thank you for inviting me to speak here this morning. It is a privilege to address you in Freedom Hall as I did one year ago. This is the tenth Governors’ Forum held since 2006; and the third held in independent South Sudan. This Forum is becoming a tradition that serves the country well. UNDP is proud to have supported the previous Governors’ Forums, and to work under the leadership of the Government to make it a success.

25 November 2013 – Juba: From 26 – 29 November, ten state governors, members of the Legislature, key ministers and development partners will gather at the Freedom Hall in Juba for discussion and action on policies related to transparent and accountable service delivery for local development. The event will be organized by the office of the president with support from UNDP.

The Acting Head of the South Sudan Bureau for Community Security and Small Arms Control (CSSAC Bureau), Dr Riak Gok Majok, yesterday flagged off a ‘Community Security Caravan’ (the Caravan) which will use a multi-faceted public information and community sensitisation approach that incorporates behavioural change messages and innovative drama to sensitise civilians about the dangers of misusing small arms and light weapons.

The Government of Japan has approved US $300,000 (29,475,000 Japanese Yen) to UNDP to support the constitutional review process in the Republic of South Sudan. The funding, provided through the Japan-UNDP Partnership Fund, will support the activities of South Sudan’s National Constitutional Review Commission in holding public consultations, especially with women, supporting media strategies to galvanise public participation, as well as the printing and distribution of the Transitional Constitution 2011.

A two-day Exit Workshop for the second group of 91 Civil Service Support Officers (CSSOs) under the RSS/IGAD Initiative for Capacity Enhancement concluded sessions today at the Juba Bridge Hotel with the signing of a new extension agreement for a further two years between Norway and UNDP. The Exit workshop, which began on 30 November, had been organized to bid farewell to the group, as well as to look back at what has been accomplished, and share experiences based on the key objectives of the program.
