The United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone (UNIPSIL) successfully handed over its office in Kono to the One UN Family in Sierra Leone today. This is a result of a planned exit strategy that has been endorsed by the United Nations Security Council and discussed with the Government.

Technology is playing a major role in connecting the people throughout Sierra Leone and with the rest of the world, spreading social messages, and contributing to overall development by enabling access to information and resources. Young people are undoubtedly the connector to this new era and often benefit from using technology to search employment, start a business or get valuable information on development related issues.

On this International Day of Democracy, I call on leaders to hear, respect and respond appropriately to the voices of the people, whether expressed directly or through elected representatives. I call on the world’s citizens to think about how they can use their voice to not only take control of their destiny, but to translate their desires and the desires of others into a better future for all." United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement to commemorate this day, calling citizens and governments to reach out to understand and listen to those who may be weaker or more vulnerable.

This year’s observance of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation comes amid intensifying international efforts to accelerate progress on the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by the end of 2015, the internationally agreed deadline. Concurrently, the South has assumed a greater role in the global development landscape. In many developing countries incomes are up, poverty is declining and hope is rising.

Sierra Leone today launched its first ever “Status of the Youth” report, painting the most comprehensive situation update on youth employment, education, well-being and participation in the development process. “We know that a nation can only rise with its youths,” said Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma, launching the report on International Youth Day in the presence of the country’s development partners, including Executive Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen.

A brand new city abattoir equipped with a refrigerator room and a water purification center were built by the Kenema City Council while the Kenema District Council undertook the construction of a community health center in Hangha Town, outside Kenema city. The projects were funded UNDP and the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) under the Local Government and Economic Development Joint Programme (LGED-JP) and the Gender Equitable Local Development (GELD) Programme also supported by UN-WOMEN

New York, Dakar: 23 July, 2013 - Abdoulaye Mar Dièye assumed his role yesterday as Head of the Regional Bureau for Africa (RBA) and Assistant Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Mr. Dièye was appointed to his post by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. A Senegalese national, he brings to the bureau and region years of distinguished experience, most recently as UNDP Chief of Staff and Director of the Executive Office.

The National Youth Commission, with technical support from UNDP, has today Monday 3rd June, commenced the second year of the Graduate Internship Programme (GIP), with the aim of promoting decent employment opportunities for Sierra Leonean graduate youths. The Programme, which was successfully piloted last year will benefit over 300 graduates from tertiary education institutions wishing to acquire productive work experience.

I am very pleased to be here at this Round Table Conference as part of the global MDG Momentum: 1000 days of Action. My thanks go to the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr Kaifala Marah and the Government for holding of this round table discussion. This is testament to the Government’s commitment to advancing the MDGs and sustainable human development in Sierra Leone. It is also a pleasure to see our partners and colleagues from various agencies, civil society and academia all contributing to achieving the MDGs in diverse ways.

A mission from the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme’s (EVP) Regional Office, led by the Director of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre in Ouagadougou, was in Sierra Leone from 8th to 12th April to fast-track the deployment of the 40 ECOWAS Volunteers earmarked for the health and education sectors of the country. The team met with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology; Ministry of Health and Sanitation; Ministry of Youth Affairs and the Ministry of Sports, as well as various other stakeholders from the civil society and UNDP/UNV who are technical partners to the Programme.
