The UN family in collaboration with the Environment Protection Agency of Sierra Leone, various government departments working on environment have organized two separate events, including the launch of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme to mark this year’s World Environmental Day, June 5th in Freetown.

The National Youth Commission, with technical support from UNDP, has today Monday 3rd June, commenced the second year of the Graduate Internship Programme (GIP), with the aim of promoting decent employment opportunities for Sierra Leonean graduate youths. The Programme, which was successfully piloted last year will benefit over 300 graduates from tertiary education institutions wishing to acquire productive work experience.

UNDP in Sierra Leone joined a list of other UNDP country offices that are upgrading their online presence through UNDP‘s Web Upgrade Project, which seeks to develop high standards of online communication across UNDP. “As Sierra Leone moves forward to consolidate democracy, review the constitution and continue to enhance inclusive economic growth, the new UNDP website will be a good source of information for the public and partners”, said Mohamed Abchir, acting Country Director.

I am very pleased to be here at this Round Table Conference as part of the global MDG Momentum: 1000 days of Action. My thanks go to the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr Kaifala Marah and the Government for holding of this round table discussion. This is testament to the Government’s commitment to advancing the MDGs and sustainable human development in Sierra Leone. It is also a pleasure to see our partners and colleagues from various agencies, civil society and academia all contributing to achieving the MDGs in diverse ways.

A mission from the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme’s (EVP) Regional Office, led by the Director of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre in Ouagadougou, was in Sierra Leone from 8th to 12th April to fast-track the deployment of the 40 ECOWAS Volunteers earmarked for the health and education sectors of the country. The team met with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology; Ministry of Health and Sanitation; Ministry of Youth Affairs and the Ministry of Sports, as well as various other stakeholders from the civil society and UNDP/UNV who are technical partners to the Programme.

The United Nations and its partners around the world are today observing the milestone of 1,000 days to the end of 2015 – the target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Starting today (5 April) – the actual milestone date – through to Friday 12 April, UN offices around the world are working with governments, civil society and international partners to mark “MDG Momentum: 1,000 Days of Action” in a variety of ways.

With Sierra Leone recording one of the fastest growth in human development index in African since 2000, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Dr. Samura Kamara has launched the Human Development Report 2013 titled “The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World” at the State Hall, Parliament building in Freetown, yesterday 19th March 2013, attended by ministers of government, foreign diplomatic missions, members of parliament, senior government officials, civil society activists and representatives from the academia.

The Government of Sierra Leone and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed the Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP) at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, last week in Freetown on the eve of the inauguration of the President of Sierra Leone for his second five year term, agreeing on the strategic priorities for the next two years.

Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon Hadiru Kalokoh, has called on Paramount Chiefs and tribal headmen to “Strive to become modern chiefs of the 21st century … chiefs who administer their subjects using modern tenets of democracy and human rights as against the old ways of absolute monarchy coercion” at the launch of the Government’s newly formulated Chiefdom and Traditional Administration Policy in the four major cities of Kenema, Bo, Makeni and Freetown.
